A sign of the times

A timeless pop classic from 1983, courtesy of The Belle Stars.

Rising from the ashes of ska band The Bodysnatchers, The Belle Stars followed fellow 2 Tone emigrants Madness to Stiff Records but their poppier approach didn’t initially bring them any hits. Stiff supremo Dave Robinson suggested they try recording cover versions to build a following, then hit the public with their original material. And it worked! Versions of “Iko Iko” and “The Clapping Song” made the top 40, and then came this, one of those magic pop moments where everything comes together.

The B-side features another original song, which is decent enough to overcome the initial disappointment at finding it isn’t a Prince Buster cover.

And the 12″ offers an extended version with all the tricks you would expect from a 12″ remix of the era.
